Watch Parts Over Ebony on Gunmetal Rollerball

This hand-crafted pen is made from genuine watch parts. The disassembled parts are bent on a Jeweler’s dapping block to follow the curve of a hand painted brass tube. This particular pen has some microcircutry parts as well as traditional watch components, chosen to compliment the pen hardware. The parts are painstakingly glued to the tube and allowed to dry for 24 hours. The tube and parts are then cast in clear acrylic and held under pressure to prevent air bubbles from forming while the acrylic cures. Once fully hardened, the raw acrylic blank is turned on a lathe with super sharp carbide blades. The turned barrel is wet-sanded to a glass-like finish before a final polish on a Jeweler’s buffing wheel is applied.

The pen body is made from Gabon Ebony that was stabilized in resin. Ebony is very dense and brittle. Stabilization helps prevent fracture, however, the turning, even with a carbide blade is delicate and time consuming. The turned blank was sealed, sanded and cleaned through 8 grades of sand paper. Several layers of Renaissance wax were applied and then the barrel was polished with three compounds and buffed on a Jeweler’s wheel.

The barrels are mounted on a handsome gun metal rollerball with a postable magnetic cap. This pen uses Schmidt 5888 rollerball refills.
