Spanish Moss and Florentine Gold

This unique pen is made from Spanish Moss cast in clear acrylic at Pen Studio. The moss was collected, dried and packed into a heated mold, to which warmed Alumilite was added. The mold was held under pressure to prevent air bubbles from forming while the acrylic hardened. The blank cured overnight and was cut to size and drilled. This particular barrel was back painted with gold and Florentine gold to show through the threads of moss.

Once the paint cured, a brass tube was glued inside. When the epoxy fully hardened the blank was turned with a carbide tool on a lathe. The turned barrel was sanded and then wet sanded to 12,000 grit. The entire blank was sealed with cyanoacrylate and wet sanded again through 9-steps. Several layers of Renaissance wax were applied and the barrel was further polished with White Diamond compound on a jeweler’s buffing wheel.

The finished barrel is mounted on a gun metal twist ballpoint. Twist the cap to extend or retract the writing tip. This pen uses Parker ballpoint or gel refills.
