This hand made pen is a Pen Studio original casting made from Lavender buds and Lilac wood. The cap started as a painted brass tube. Dried Lavender flower buds were individually glued to the tube and then cast in a semi-transparent lavender and gold acrylic. The cured blank was hand turned on a lathe and refined through a 9-step wet sanding process. Several layers of Renaissance Wax were applied to the barrel and further polished with White Diamond compound on a jeweler’s buffing wheel.
The lower barrel is Lilac wood from an old growth plant damaged in Hurricane Sandy. The broken trunk was cut and sealed with wax and allowed to air dry for over two years. Sections were cut into blanks and stabilized in resin under vacuum pressure and held until the perfect project came along. This beautifully grained piece was selected to compliment the “garden” theme of the Lavender bud cap. The wood was turned on a lathe with carbide tools and sanded through 10-courses (180-1200 grit), cleaned and sealed with cyanoacrylate (CA). The cured CA was wet-sanded through a 9-step process from 1500-12,000 grit. Several layers of Renaissance Wax were applied and hand buffed. The barrel was further polished with White Diamond compound and buffed on a jeweler’s wheel.
These unique barrels were mounted on a chrome rollerball, which uses smooth flowing Schmidt 5888 ceramic refills. The refill can be replaced by unscrewing the tip (nib), retaining the spring in the tail (small end toward the refill). Insert the new refill and screw the pen back together.
