Pinecone Cast in Acrylic

This Pen Studio original is made from a pinecone collected on a hike in Arden, NC. The dried cone bandsawed down to 3/4” x 3/4” x 5” to fit in a silicone mold. The mold was filled with a mixture of blue, copper and gold semi-transparent acrylic and placed in a pressure pot at 40# psi to prevent air bubbles from forming while the acrylic hardened. The cured blank was cut in two and drilled for the cap and lower sections of this rollerball pen. Each blank was painstakingly hand turned on a lathe a few shallow cuts at a time while adding thin layers of CA to the exposed organic material to prevent tear out. Between the drying time and shallow cuts it took 4 days to complete both barrels, but I hope you’ll agree the effort was worth it.

Once both barrels were turned down to fit the hardware, thin layers of CA sealed the partially exposed pinecones. The barrels were wet-sanded through a 9-step process to 12,000 grit, given several layers of Renaissance wax and then polished with White Diamond compound and buffed on a Jeweler’s Wheel to a glass-like finish.

This hand turned pen is mounted in a perfectly balanced chrome rollerball. Understated black accents and a postable cap complete the impeccable classic styling. This pen uses smooth flowing Schmidt 5888 ceramic rollerball refills.
