Ponderosa Pine Bark/Copper Swirl Rollerball

The cap of this hand made pen was cast at PenStudio from a piece of Poderosa Pine bark I fished out of Lake Tahoe in the high Sierras on a kayak trip. The bark of these giant coniferous pines is made of thick layers of dark red scaled platelets. The pieces I saved out of the lake measured 2.25” thick which is not surprising when you see how large these trees are.

The National Register of Big Trees lists a ponderosa pine that is 235 ft tall and 324 inches in circumference. In January 2011, a Pacific ponderosa pine in the Rogue River–Siskiyou National Forest in Oregon was measured with a laser to be 268.35 ft high. This is the second tallest known pine after the sugar pine.

After 5 years of drying, the bark was cast with green, copper and bronze semi-transparent acrylic. The lower barrel is a complimentary copper and bronze acrylic. Both pieces were hand turned on a lathe with very sharp carbide blades. The cap was sealed in cyanoacrylate (CA) and both barrels were wet sanded to 15,000 grit for a glass-like finish.

This one-of-a-kind pen is framed in a classic chrome postable rollerball with black accents on the cap and center band. Your pen uses Schmidt 5888 rollerball refills.
