Padauk/Amherst Pheasant Feathers Rollerball

This hand-turned pen is made from two different materials chosen for their complimentary color and texture. The upper barrel is Padauk (puh•DOUK), a generic name for a number of leguminous trees in the genus Pterocarpus that have reddish wood that ages to a mellow brown. Native to Asia, the South Pacific and West Africa. Pterocarpus indicus also known as Narra grows in the Philippines, Borneo and the Malay peninsula preferring rain forests.

The lower barrel is made from real feathers from Amherst Pheasant- game farm and domestic pen raised birds. This feather barrel is the result of a three day process in which each feather is arranged one by one and then cast in clear polyresin.

The Padauk wood was hand turned on a lathe. The wood is sanded through 7 steps (400-1200 grit) between applications of sanding sealer. The cleaned wood is sealed in cyanoacrylate and then wet-sanded through a 9-step process. The feather polyresin blank was also hand turned, then wet sanded through a 9-step process. Several coats of Renaissance wax were applied and the barrel was further polished with White Diamond compound then buffed on a jeweler’s wheel to a glass-like finish.

The finished barrel was mounted on a chrome rollerball. Your pen uses smooth flowing Schmidt 5888 ceramic rollerball refills.
