Ringneck Pheasant Feathers on Bolt Action Ballpoint

This stunningly handsome rollerball was painstakingly turned from Alligator bone cast in resin. Alligator jawbone was carefully cut and shaped with a bandsaw and then cast under pressure in black Alumilite resin with metallic gold nuggets added for a dramatic sparkle. See the holes where teeth once protruded?

The cast blank was cut to length for cap and lower barrels. The pieces were slowly drilled lengthwise. Bone heats quickly and can fracture away from the surrounding acrylic. Brass tubes were glued inside and, once cured, the blanks were hand turned on a lathe using very sharp carbide blades. The cuts are shallow and progress is slow in an effort to control overheating. Once turned to shape, the barrels were sealed in cyanoacrylate and then wet sanded from 1200-15,000 grit. Several layers of Renaissance wax were added and the barrels were further polished with White Diamond compound and buffed on a jeweler’s wheel.
