Flamed Copper on Art Deco Ballpoint

Your hand made pen is a Pen Studio original mounted on a stunning Art Deco style ballpoint. Art Deco was an opulent and lavish art form that spanned the 1920’s and 1930’s. The art form influenced architecture, industrial design, interior design, fashion, and film of the period. The antique pewter and brass finish along with the amber Swarovski crystal highlight and starburst design borrow elements that you’ll recognize in the city hall in Los Angeles, the Empire State Building, the Texas & Pacific RR terminal in Ft. Worth, and the ultimate expression of Art Deco architecture, the Chrysler Building!

The barrel was created by flaming copper foil with a torch to create the dramatic painted color effect. Copper oxidizes different colors based on the heat of the flame. The warm colors burst onto the surface first followed by cool colors- blues and greens. The flamed copper “leaf” was carefully applied to a tacky brass tube and coated with a thin layer of lacquer. Once dried, the tube was cast in clear Alumilite under pressure and low-heat cured. The hardened resin was turned on a lathe with carbide tools and wet-sanded through a 9-step process from 1500-12,000 grit. Several layers of Renaissance Wax were applied and hand buffed. The barrel was further polished with White Diamond compound and buffed on a jeweler’s wheel.

This ballpoint is a twist mechanism. Hold the barrel in one hand and twist the cap to extend or retract the writing tip. Your pen uses Parker style ballpoint or gel refills.
