The finished appearance of this pen reminds me of a shady walk through the woods. The upper barrel is turned from a deep green pebbled acrylic whose sun-dappled depths are created by back-painting the drilled core silver. The turned acrylic is wet-sanded through a 9-step process and then polished to a flawless gloss with rouge compounds on a jeweler’s buffing wheel.
The lower barrel is hand turned from a piece of Sierra Juniper, Juniperus occidentalis var. australis. Native to California and westernmost Nevada, south of 4° 30’ N latitude in the Sierra Nevada and San Bernardino Mountains, the rough bark and twisted trunks make it easily identifiable. The turned wood was sanded to 1500 grit and sealed with 7 layers of Renaissance wax for a very natural satin finish.
These distinctive materials are mounted on a stately chrome rollerball with gold accents at the postable cap and center band. This pen uses smooth flowing Schmidt 5888 ceramic rollerball refills.
