Ebony/Spalted Pecan on Black Ti/Platinum Cigar Pen

This cigar style twist ballpoint is dressed in Black Titanium and Platinum finishes. The barrels are hand-turned from two different materials. The upper barrel is turned from Gabon Ebony, Diospyros crassiflora, native to western Africa. Ebony is a dense black wood -dense enough to sink in water. It is finely textured and can be polished to a very smooth finish, making it valuable as an ornamental wood. Examples of carved pieces have been found in ancient Egyptian tombs circa 3000 BC. D. crassiflora is considered the truest black of the ebony woods and its carefully restricted harvesting makes this fine example very rare indeed.

The lower barrel is turned from spalted pecan wood harvested in Texas. “Spalting” refers to any type of wood coloration caused by fungi. The type of black lines visible in this pecan are known as zone lines. This type of spalting does not occur due to any specific type of fungus, but is instead an interaction zone in which different fungi have erected barriers to protect their resources. The unique coloration and patterns in spalted woods are highly sought after by woodworkers.
